Diploma in Mechatronics

At a Glance

Duration: 3 years full-time
Qualification: Diploma in Mechatronics
Application: Apply during the Joint Admissions Exercise following the release of the GCE ‘O’ Level results. For other categories of applicants, please refer to the section on 'Admissions'.

Visit the Temasek Engineering School Website @ http://www-eng.tp.edu.sg/

The Course

Mechatronics is the synergistic integration of mechanical engineering with electronics and intelligent computer control in the design of products and manufacturing processes. It includes the use of robots and automated machine tools and manufacturing systems. This course provides you with a solid foundation in electronics, mechanical engineering and computing systems. You will acquire the necessary core competencies in the areas of automation, robotics, mechatronics design, programmable logic controllers, electro-pneumatics, vision systems, computer numerical control, computer aided design/computer aided manufacturing, sensors, virtual reality, computer programming, and microcontroller and control engineering. Besides being technologically competent, you will also develop effective communication skills.

To better prepare you for the industry’s advancement in technology, this course offers subjects that cater to certain technological areas or specialised industries. If you are keen to pursue a career in the aerospace industry, you may take the Aerospace Engineering option offered to you during the second year of your course.

Alternatively, you may choose any one of three Cluster Electives in your final year. These Cluster Electives involve technology areas such as: Process Control & Automation, 3D Design & Visualisation and Robotics. Both the Aerospace Engineering Option and the Cluster Electives allow you to specialise in an exciting field with great prospects, and still get a broad-based training in other popular mechatronics areas. Besides being able to match your interest and aptitude to one of these areas, you will find yourself more industry ready upon graduation.

Career Opportunities

You can excel in industries as diverse as electronics, manufacturing, food processing, pharmaceutical, chemical and aviation, where you can be involved in engineering, R&D work, equipment design and development, planning, project management and marketing research. You are also qualified to work in high-tech manufacturing environments and the growing petrol-chemical industry. You can also pursue degree programmes in electronics, mechanical or computer engineering, both locally and overseas.

The market opportunities and benefits to be gained from designing smart products and automated systems with an integrated use of electronics, mechanical and computer technologies are huge, and will continue to grow rapidly in the coming years. Firms that design and produce such products will increasingly need graduates who are competent in the field of mechatronics, providing abundant job opportunities for you.

The Course

Tourism, a multi-billion dollar global industry, looks set to make major inroads into the world economy and contribute significantly to the Singapore economy. In the near future, resort and other related leisure businesses alone will see an increased demand for trained personnel with the requisite skills. The Singapore Tourism Board projects that 10,000 jobs will be created when the two integrated resorts are developed in 2009. This suggests that the leisure and resort management industry will become one of the hottest in terms of job expansion.

This course aims to give you maximum exposure to a comprehensive spectrum of leisure and resort businesses that will enable you to be a part of the industry. It will allow you to be on the pulse of some of the most exciting businesses in the tourism industry. You will find the course both challenging and rewarding, with ample real-life learning opportunities through exposure to industry. In addition, it affords you the flexibility to move into myriad leisure businesses.

The curriculum strongly emphasises three major segments of the tourism industry: the Resort business, Leisure business and Meetings and Event business. In each area, you will be exposed to key aspects of operating and managing resorts and leisure entities such as clubs, spas, attractions and cruise ships. You will also have hands-on experience in organising meetings and events. Your ability to plan, analyse and strategise will also be critically honed.

The course also focuses on preparing you to handle the demands of working life through subjects such as Business Etiquette and Service Excellence in which you will learn how to interact with others in a business setting, and study the finer points of global citizenship and cross-cultural communication.

You will also be allowed to choose two elective subjects, which will broaden your knowledge of the tourism industry. These include subjects such as Introduction to Gaming Operations, Ticketing Reservations, Culinary Science and e-business in Hospitality and Tourism. Apart from these options, you will also undergo a 20-week attachment to a company selected by you.

The course maximises your learning by utilising teaching modes that enhance hands-on discovery. Your active engagement in forums, discussions and presentations will allow room for creative thinking and problem-solving.

The Course

The culinary and catering industry in Singapore and the region is set to grow in the next decade and beyond. With the introduction of integrated resorts in Singapore, it is anticipated that supporting facilities and services such as restaurants, hotels and events and conventions management will be in great demand. Conceived against this exciting backdrop, this course will propel you into a rewarding and creative world with exciting career opportunities.

The course strongly focuses on giving you a thorough appreciation of ideas ranging from the management of the overall customer experience in resort restaurants by culinary and catering industries to the appreciation of the complex, integrated processes found in catering establishments. You will be given ample opportunities to allow your passion for the culinary arts to flourish, your creative voice to be heard and your commitment to providing great food and wine to be translated into operating and managing a restaurant.

The curriculum is designed to take you through critical ideas: food product knowledge, basic business skills and an understanding of the culinary and catering industries. It also covers more advanced areas of study such as revenue management and marketing for the restaurant and catering industries. Throughout the course, your culinary and service skills will be honed through hands-on practice and projects in the state-of-the-art kitchens and restaurants on the campus. In addition, you will undergo a 20-week internship in your senior year in a commercial environment.

The course stretches your creative and critical thinking skills in decision-making and problem-solving which are required in supervisory and executive or managerial positions. There are also opportunities for training in entrepreneurship and in running your very own restaurant.
